Tonbridge: Local Plan take a move forward

By Weald Radio Newsroom

The draft Local Plan moves forward following committee decision.

Following a vote by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s Housing and Planning Scrutiny Select Committee, the committee has recommended to the council’s cabinet that the next stage of the draft Local Plan move forward, paving the way for an extensive public consultation that will open on 10 November 2025.

The Local Plan is a vital document that will shape how Tonbridge and Malling develops up to 2042. It will guide where new homes, jobs, and services are provided while protecting the natural environment and green spaces, historic areas, and essential infrastructure.

Residents, businesses, community groups, and developers will be invited to participate in the consultation and help shape the borough’s future. The draft plan addresses the government-set target of 19,746 new homes (1,097 per year), prioritising development in existing urban areas while protecting the borough's character. It also ensures that infrastructure such as schools, transport, and healthcare keeps pace with growth.

Cllr Mike Taylor, Cabinet Member for Planning, said:
“Now that the committee has voted in favour of consulting, we’ll be asking everyone to get involved and share their views from 10 November. This is a crucial opportunity to help shape the future of Tonbridge and Malling. The Local Plan is about meeting the needs of our communities, protecting what makes our borough special, and planning for a sustainable future. If new evidence comes forward during or after the consultation, the council can make adjustments before the next stage of the plan.”

Further details, including how to participate in the consultation, will be published on the council’s website
