The footbridge linking Lower Castle Field Car Park to the Racecourse Sportsground will be closing tomorrow (Thurs 30 April 2026).
Going forward, pedestrian access to the sportsground from the car park will be via the nearby bridge, next to the swimming pool.
After two years of monitoring and detailed inspections by an independent structural engineer, the bridge has been found to have reached the end of its safe working life. It was installed in 1994 as a temporary structure, during the construction of the swimming pool, but has continued to be used for over thirty years.
On Thursday, access to the crossing will be closed and the bridge will be boarded up, before being removed later this year. What happens next will depend on an assessment of the costs and options for a potential replacement.
